Abstract
On the basis of the 1993 Chinese death notice data and 1993 Korean Annual report on the cause of death statistics, the mortality patterns and proportion of individual cause of death in two countries were compared. In both sexes, the mortality rates were the highest almost all age groups in Chinese rural areas followed by urban areas and Korea, except 30-59 age group in male. In Korea, cerebrovascular diseases, motor-vehicle accident, malignant neoplasm of stomach, and chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis were major causes of death, which composed of 33,2% of total death. In Chinese urban areas, cerebrovascular diseases, bronchitis, chronic unspecified emphysema and asthma, ischemic heart diseases, malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus and lung were major cause of death(over 50% of total death). In Chinese rural areas, deaths caused by infectious diseases and homicide/injury were markedly higher than Korea and Chinese urban areas. High mortality rate of chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis, motor-vehicle accident, diabetes mellitus were major characteristics of death pattern in Korea. On the other hand, death pattern of China differed from that of Korea in that bronchitis, chronic unspeci ed emphysema and asthma, and ischemic heart diseases were major causes of death. Especially cerebrovascular diseases were found to be especially frequent in all areas, These differences in mortality rates and proportion of individual causes of death between china and Korea are supposed to be attributable to the differences in availability and accessibility of medical services and the distribution or level of risk factors for each diseases.
